Winter Wonderland: Enjoy a City Break this Christmas

The sentiments in Bing Crosby’s classic song ‘White Christmas’ will probably ring true for many UK residents. Indeed, whilst the British weather is often portrayed as being cold and miserable, millions of people dream of a proper, white Christmas every year, but it never quite seems to materialise. Moreover, rain and wind tends to be more likely these days, which doesn’t quite have the same festive effect as a dose of the white stuff.

That’s why some look further afield to experience a true winter wonderland. Travel northwards or eastwards of Britain and there’s a myriad of cities to choose from, with the likes of the Czech Republic, Austria and Sweden all virtually guaranteed a spot of snow over the Christmas period.

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and has often been described as the most beautiful city in the whole of Europe, earning itself the nickname ‘The Golden City’. But in winter, there’s always a good chance of it becoming ‘The White City’: the climate will most certainly be below zero at any rate which always increases the chances somewhat.

When you’re there, there is an overwhelming feeling no matter what you do or where you go…whether it’s to the cathedral for early-morning Mass, Smetana Hall for some classical music or a snowball fight in the old, cobbled streets, that simply being in Prague is an awe-inspiring experience in itself.

If Austria’s on the tourist to-do list, then Christmas is as good a time – if not better – to go as any. Salzburg’s Altstadt is a masterstroke of town-planning, and when it’s plastered in freshly-fallen snow, it’s an awesome sight. Even those who aren’t bothered one way or another about a white Christmas, Salzburg tends to be a little quieter over the festive period, so if you’ve always had a hankering to visit Mozart’s birthplace, winter is a good time to avoid the crowds.

Then there’s the Swedish capital, Stockholm. For those looking for a winter city break after the festive period, Stockholm offers a great opportunity to engage in a bit of ice-skating. Given that it’s built on fourteen islands, water surrounds the city and it tends to freeze rock-solid from January onwards.

If skating isn’t your thing, fret not. Take a walk on one of the inlets or jump on a short cruise (an ice-breaker, of course) through the city. The heart of Stockholm is simply beautiful, with spectacular palaces and church spires galore helping to create the perfect winter cityscape.

Of course, with snow, ice normally isn’t far behind. City break travel insurance can protect you financially from a nasty slip while suitable clothing and footwear will help keep the cold at bay. This will also give you cover should you experience any other kind of mishap when on holiday: it is, after all, better to be safe than sorry.

So from Stockholm to Salzburg and beyond, Europe is a winter wonderland for those on the lookout for a spot of snow. Just remember to pack your woollies…and your wellies!
