Usually, ski instructors start teaching by showing the students how to manoeuvre around with the skates. When wearing the ski boots, one will be leaning forward slightly. The reason is that when you ski down a mountain, you body will be slightly inclined forward. Trying walking with ski boots on, the very first time, could be a bit difficult. But, as you learn to walk with the knees slightly bent, it will come naturally to you.

The manoeuvre first taught to anyone is called the snow plow. In this technique, a person literally uses his skis as a snow plough. If you position the skis as if slowly moving outwards and away from the body by applying some pressure, it will help in halting the ride. The skiing person can guide himself by bending his knees and leaning in one direction or the other, depending on the direction he wants to go. The techniques of skiing can be taught in an hour, even if the beginner has never been in a pair of ski boots before in his life. That is the beauty of skiing, and once you have learned to do the snow plough and are able to guide yourself on the skis, you are off the mark. One can control one’s speed by resorting to the snow ploughing method; but go slow in the beginning. As you pick up speed and move reasonably fast, push the skis back into the plow position to control the speed.

The beginners should make it a point to stick to the trails designed especially for novices. These trails will be marked with a green emblem in most resorts. The blue coloured trails are meant for intermediate skiers. Within a day of skiing through the beginner trails, one will be able to go for those trails. The black trails, meant for expert skiers, can turn out to be dangerous for people who do not possess the skill levels to manoeuvre those trails. It is prudent to avoid the black trails unless you have amassed a great deal of skiing experience. So, go ahead and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.
