Living in Florida certainly has its advantages for many people it is the weather, known as the sunshine state. Many residents have lived in the north and decide to move to a warmer climate including many retirees. Florida offers all of the tourism activities as places to work or to visit from time to time such as Universal Studios, Walt Disney World, and the well known beaches on both coasts. The eastern coast is against the Atlantic Ocean with beaches such as Cocoa and Daytona and the west coast of the state borders the Gulf of Mexico with beaches such as Clearwater and Pensacola. Walking the beaches on the west coast is known for great shelling conditions that many retirees and families enjoy. Besides the coast, Florida has a large number of lakes and inland waterways (over four thousand square miles of water inland) that are also great for swimming, water skiing, and fishing. There are over 18 million residents living in Florida with about 17% being over the age of 65. Florida has a large number of people that work in agriculture due to the long and prosperous growing season for items such as oranges and other fruits. The fishing industry is a huge industry for Florida. Due to the amount of coastal waterways and the year round warm temperatures Florida is able to market many kinds of fish and shell fish throughout the year. Many others work in tourism and hospitality in certain areas of the state where the vacation attractions are located. It is most helpful to speak Spanish to live and especially work in Florida due to the large Spanish speaking population residing in the state. Florida has many large universities offering residents plenty of opportunities to support a favorite college team and allowing for further education without leaving their home state. Some of the universities are Miami University, University of Florida, and Florida State. Florida is not just about water and universities it also is the home of several state forests and parks. Due to the beaches surrounding the state and the mild winters, beach activities can be enjoyed just about year round for those living in Florida. The average high temperatures in the winter months do not normally go below the mid 60's. Many people find living in Florida is like being on vacation all the time; however, unless someone is retired, they must find work to do that does not ruin their lifelong "vacation."
